History of the Milano-Torino (Mi-To)
The Milano-Torino, often simply called Mi-To, is one of the oldest classic Italian cocktails, dating back to the late 19th century. It was created in Milan in 1860, designed to highlight the flavors of two of Italy’s most famous vermouths: the sweet red vermouth from Turin (Torino) and the dry white vermouth from Milan (Milano). This simple yet balanced cocktail became a favorite among the sophisticated crowd in Italy, especially in the north, as it reflected the strong rivalry between the two cities—Milan and Turin.
The drink's name, Mi-To, is a playful combination of both cities’ names. It’s a drink that conveys the Italian culture of enjoying aperitivo with a refined but straightforward style. The Milano-Torino is often considered a perfect drink for the early evening, before dinner, with its bitterness and sweetness making it ideal for stimulating the appetite.
Recipe: Milano-Torino (Mi-To)
Ingredients:
2 oz (60 ml) Carpano Antica Formula (sweet red vermouth from Turin)
2 oz (60 ml) Martini Rosso (sweet vermouth from Milan)
Ice
Orange peel twist (for garnish)
Method:
Chill the glass: Begin by chilling a lowball glass or coupe glass by filling it with ice water for a few minutes.
Prepare the cocktail: In a mixing glass, combine the two vermouths (Carpano Antica Formula and Martini Rosso) over ice.
Stir: Stir gently for about 30 seconds to chill and dilute the mixture slightly.
Strain and serve: Discard the ice from the glass and strain the cocktail into the chilled glass.
Garnish: Garnish with an orange peel twist, ensuring a touch of citrus aroma with each sip.
Appetizer Pairing: Bruschetta al Pomodoro
A fresh and light appetizer like Bruschetta al Pomodoro pairs perfectly with the Mi-To cocktail. The acidity of the tomatoes and the richness of the olive oil will complement the sweetness and bitterness of the vermouths in the Milano-Torino.
Bruschetta al Pomodoro Recipe:
Ingredients:
4 ripe tomatoes (chopped)
1 garlic clove (peeled and halved)
Fresh basil leaves (chopped)
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
4 slices of grilled Italian baguette or rustic bread
Method:
In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped tomatoes, basil, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Rub the garlic halves over each slice of grilled bread.
Top each slice with the tomato mixture and serve immediately.
