Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

1. History

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC is one of central Italy’s most recognizable red wines, produced from the Montepulciano grape in the Abruzzo region. Established in 1968, the DOC spans the coastal and hilly areas of Abruzzo, with its best vineyards often found on rolling hills that benefit from both Mediterranean breezes and cool mountain air. Montepulciano is a late-ripening grape, and Abruzzo’s long growing season allows it to fully develop its rich, juicy character. Known for its deep color, plush tannins, and approachable nature, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo offers a balance of ripe fruit, herbal nuances, and soft acidity. While it has long been appreciated as an everyday wine, the rise of quality-conscious producers and the introduction of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG have shown that this varietal can also produce complex, age-worthy wines.

2. Pairing

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo’s medium-to-full body, ripe fruit, and gentle tannins make it a versatile choice for a range of Italian and Mediterranean dishes.

  • Lasagna Bolognese: The wine’s lush fruit and acidity cut through the richness of the layers of meat, sauce, and cheese.

  • Pasta with Lamb Ragù: Its herbal and earthy notes complement the savory, slow-cooked flavors of lamb.

  • Pizza with Pepperoni and Sausage: Montepulciano’s ripe cherry and plum flavors balance the smoky, spicy toppings.

  • Roast Pork or Porchetta: The wine’s robust character pairs beautifully with the crispy, herb-infused pork.

  • Aged Pecorino or Provolone: These cheeses’ salty, nutty profile matches Montepulciano’s fruity depth and soft tannins.

3. The Top Wineries

  • Valentini: One of the most iconic producers of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, known for its complex, age-worthy wines that stand as a benchmark for the region.

  • Emidio Pepe: Renowned for its traditional, handcrafted approach, Emidio Pepe’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is celebrated for its elegance, longevity, and purity.

  • Masciarelli: A dynamic producer that showcases the full range of Montepulciano’s potential, from approachable entry-level wines to premium, cellar-worthy bottlings.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a wine that I’ve always admired for its versatility and approachability. It’s a true representation of central Italy’s warm, inviting spirit—a wine that’s perfect for both casual meals and more elaborate gatherings. I love its ability to pair with classic Italian comfort food, bringing out the best in rustic pastas, pizzas, and roasted meats. At the same time, the more refined examples remind me that Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is more than just a “go-to” wine; it’s a testament to Abruzzo’s rich culinary heritage and the dedication of its winemakers.
